and so, I had a joyful weekend again.
End of the year is coming, mr.windy is back to Singapore. How I love the wind blowing into my room and brought in the tree and grass smell!
I was caught up between two choices yesterday. One was from juwita who asked me to join her and friends to walk down Chinatown for the lantern festival. Immediately I said yes of course. Then one hour later, my relative called and invited me over for a dinner. I hesitate but then I said yes too.
Family or friends, which one do you choose?
Or, is it the matter of ‘first come first serve’?
Or, is the weights of decision rely on the ‘preference’?
Well, I thought a lot of it recently.
Somehow I feel I had been taught to choose ‘family first’.
After reading this, you might say, ‘peggy you think too much.’ Probably, and I shouldn’t link these- two things together but I couldn’t help it. Anyway here was the story.
Remember I mentioned earlier I fell from roller blade? Ah ya, week 3 after the accident and I am recovering super fast! Thanks God! Other than a slight uncomfortable feel when I bend my body backward, I am doing fine.
That day was wei wei birthday. And of course they invited me over for lunch. But on that day I had arranged outing with friends since 3 weeks earlier and the worst part was because it was me who initiated the outing. So I said sorry to my family and ended up those friends didn’t make it to the outing, and worse, I injured myself.
Of course one couldn’t help but to think, had I been to the birthday lunch instead, I wouldn’t be in pain nor had spent lots of money on doctors and medicines.
But of course, from the accident, I do learn something.
So, that’s how I come to the conclusion – family first.
Anyway, continue from above… so we went over to the festival, which to my utter dismay and escalating disappointment, there’s nothing resemble the image and feel of ‘lantern festival’
There’s a huge and super brightly lit stage, loud sound system, and it was surrounded by smaller stands which was even more brightly lit with white fluorescent lights.
Sure there were lanterns hanging here and there. But it was under the tent, hanging pathetically – unlighted, beside the fluorescent light.
(Totally, totally, totally, so Singaporean style. The brightly lighted part I mean.)
I was deeply hoping to see a field filled with little warm candle light shinning from inside the colorful lantern, or kids here and there with their family, squatting trying to light little candles. But no, it was billions light years away different compare to my imagination.
Oh, had I mention the –modern-disastrous-lantern-design? As a toy itself it is a super fine, good one actually. But because it was being sold as lantern, I really want to puke looking at those things.
Wei wei and his cousin brother played at home earlier their lanterns. One was a little cute plastic airplane with 2 pilot bears that has really pretty light and cute music, and some part could turn-turn, it is seriously a nice toy. But it was made hanging from a stick, and meant to be lantern.
It was the cousin brother’s one. Then wei wei dad went into the room and bring out another one. This one is a larger helicopter, with prettier colourful lights and louder music. Wait. It was some heli plus bazooka plus I donno wat sound. And yes, hanging from a stick.
I wanted to faint.
I know that paper or plastic lantern with little candle might be dangerous, but hey, when else around the year you could get that excitement? How grateful I am to have still little fragment of my childhood memory, in the park, lots of yellow warm candles around, kids and parents chattering, pretty and prettier shaped lanterns…where had those days gone to?
How I miss my pjs9 housemates! So glad we had spent sometime together, forgetting the toa assignment for one night, hang traditional paper lanterns with little candles in it at our old - cloth hanger string, set the dining table out at the garage, boil some soup and had our steamboat and tong yun and yut peng under the moonlight.
I love candle. I mean, the little light from candle always had a mysterious magic shining out from it.
Well, I wouldn’t know what fun would I had if I were to choose ‘friends’ instead. Probably much more laughter, or prettier lantern to watch at Chinatown, more photo session I belief *those group of friends like to takes LOTS of photos.
But I enjoy myself equally that night. I came to a conclusion that, with family the fun level might not be that high, but it will always be somewhere that won’t let you down either.
Maybe God wanted me to learn something about this. Or else, why would they almost-always arrange meeting at the same day around the same time?
